The UK fleet market will have 100% vehicle connectivity by 2025, according to new industry research.
The finding comes from a British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association report into the impact connected vehicles are having on the vehicle rental and leasing industry and their future potential.
The BVRLA Fleet Technology Report considers issues ranging from mobility as a service (MaaS) and vehicle tracking through to the potential for more efficient maintenance handling and mileage management.
It provides a detailed overview of manufacturers’ connected vehicle strategies and a breakdown of the most popular vehicle data use cases.
The report also provides a SWOT-analysis of the vehicle rental and leasing sector’s position in the connected vehicle environment along with useful tips for how fleets can work more effectively with manufacturers.
It finds that BVRLA members have an increasingly clear vision of how they can deliver more value with vehicle connectivity, but unfortunately their plans are being compromised by difficulties in getting the right access to vehicle data and concerns around compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.
The BVRLA report was produced in association with connected vehicle consultancy SBD Automotive and is partly-based on in-depth interviews with senior executives at ARI Fleet, Arval, Avis Budget Group, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, LeasePlan and Lex Autolease.
The BVRLA’s chief executive Gerry Keaney said: “Connected vehicles and data are already having a massive impact on our members and the association is determined to help them thrive in this exciting new environment.
“The whole automotive industry is grappling with the challenges and opportunities presented by this technology and the introduction of new data protection rules has added even more uncertainty.”
The BVRLA Fleet Technology Report was unveiled at the association’s annual Fleet Technology Congress, which saw more than 140 delegates gather to hear from a range of experts on topics including MaaS, future powertrains, large-scale EV deployment and business process digitisation.
