LAS VEGAS — While CES is first and foremost a consumer electronics showcase, car manufacturers have had a massive presence for a number of years now, showcasing concept cars and their latest in-vehicle technologies. Almost a third of the massive Las Vegas Convention Center was dedicated to vehicles and vehicle technology in 2020.
Here is a rundown of some of the splashiest and most outrageous cars and flying vehicles that we came across on the show floor this year.
Mercedes-Benz VISION AVTR
In the most theatrical car presentation of CES, Mercedes-Benz showed off the VISION AVTR, a far-out curvy concept that looks straight out of the movie Avatar. It was no coincidence that the automaker teamed up with Avatar director James Cameron on this wild concept that attempts to merge humans and machines.
Sony Vision-S
In one of the bigger surprises at CES, Sony had a concept car on display. No, Sony isn’t planning to make cars, but it did build a vehicle for CES to show off how the company’s cameras, sensors and communications technologies can be integrated in a daily driver.
Lamborghini Huracan with Amazon Alexa
Amazon and Lamborghini featured a flashy display of the Lamborghini Huracan with new Alexa integration to control seat heaters, interior lights and other settings.
Honda Augmented Driving Concept
Honda’s undeniably cute, yet strangely-named Augmented Driving Concept, envisions a future where pedals are gone and all control of the car is via a steering wheel that also controls acceleration and braking.
Bell Nexus 4EX air taxi
If you believe that taxis will eventually take to the air, Bell Helicopter has a concept for that. The Nexus 4EX can carry four to five passengers for up to 60 miles, cruising at 150 MPH.
Hyundai S-A1 air taxi, in partnership with Uber
Not to be outdone by Bell, Hyundai also revealed a design for a proposed air taxi, partnering with transportation tech company Uber to show off the Hyundai S-A1 air taxi, designed to cruise at 200 MPH with a operating range of about 60 miles.
Toyota LQ
Toyota’s LQ concept car is designed to build an emotional bond between car and driver using automated-driving capabilities that they call “Yui,” a combination of “You + I = Yui”
Hyundai M.Vision S
A fully autonomous concept car from Hyundai that remakes the interior into a “mobile lounge” where work and relaxation are possible.
LG’s connected self-driving car
LG partnered with Adient for its connected self-driving concept car that features a giant OLED screen, tablets, an 8-speaker sound system, rolling snack cart, a roll-out dry cleaner, and more.
